A Special Experience at Shofukuji, Japan's First Zen Temple: A Traditional Zen-style Tea Ceremony activity

Product Code:

Located in Hakata, Fukuoka, the gateway to Kyushu, Shofukuji Temple is a historic Zen temple founded by the Zen master Eisai, who brought tea seeds back from China(Southern Song Dynasty).  It is also recognized as a place deeply connected to the history of Japanese tea culture.

"Sengai-san" refers to Zen Master Sengai Gibon (1750-1837), the 123rd chief priest of Shofukuji Temple. Through his warm-hearted and often humorous Zen paintings, he shared the teachings of Zen with a wide audience. In remembrance of his legacy, a tea ceremony and sutra-copying experience are held each year leading up to his memorial day on October 7.

This plan offers participation in a "Futatsu-gashira Tea Ceremony," a simplified version of the traditional Zen-style "Yotsu-gashira Tea Ceremony." Enjoy a unique tea gathering conducted according to ancient traditions that are said to represent the origins of the Japanese tea ceremony.

Following the tea ceremony, participants will have the opportunity to view valuable works, including Sengai's Zen paintings, displayed in the Oojoin.

This is a rare opportunity to enjoy a special experience inside the Main Hall of Shofukuji Temple, an area not normally open to the public. We warmly invite you to join us.

"7 Days with Sengai"

*Tickets for the "Futatsu-gashira Tea Ceremony" (Two-Head Tea Ceremony) at 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM are available for purchase through this page.
