Usuki Stone Buddha
The National Treasure Usuki Stone Buddhas (Cliff Buddha), represented by the Koen Sekibutsu Dainichi Nyorai statue, is said to have been carved between the late Heian period and the Kamakura period. It is still shrouded in mystery as to who built them and for what purpose. The stone Buddha group is divided into four groups, named Hoki Stone Buddha Group 1 (Dogasama Ishibutsu), Hoki Stone Buddha Group 2, Sannozan Stone Buddha Group, and Koen Stone Buddha Group, in accordance with their locations
Each statue is a masterpiece in its own right, and the richly expressive images of the Buddha provide a sense of peace and tranquility to the viewer.
Currently, all 61 of the cliff Buddhas are designated as national treasures.
Brochures in English, Chinese (simplified), and Korean are available at the reception desk.
