Shimabara Castle
In addition to the existing castle tower (a local folklore museum with Christian historical materials and a 5th floor observatory) and Seibo Memorial Hall (exhibiting works by Seibo Kitamura, a master of the Japanese sculpture world), a new Sightseeing Revival Hall has been established to show all about the eruptive activities of Mount Unzen. The castle's ume (plum) garden is at its best in February. Shimabara Castle has been the residence of four clans for a total of 19 generations of feudal lords over the 250 years since its construction. The castle tower was restored in 1964 as a landmark of Shimabara. The castle tower and other buildings are used as an archives, and the historical materials related to Christian culture and the Shimabara Rebellion are a must-see!
